Proof of Concept Program: Commercialization Gap Grants

The University of California is now accepting applications for the system wide Proof of Concept Program: Commercialization Gap Grants (POC). The POC initiative is an effort to bridge the gap from research to commercialization in what is sometimes called "the valley of death:" that is, the absence of an industry sponsor and the lack of funding to build a prototype of a product or service that could then be used to solicit investment for a new company or license a new product. By facilitating the successful commercialization of innovations to society, this initiative is expected to have a positive impact on California and the state's economy.

This research opportunity is open to all fields, including physical sciences and engineering, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. Applicants may request up to one year of funding.

All applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) by 12:00 noon on February 14, 2012.  Full proposals are due 12:00 noon March 28, 2012.  LOIs and proposals must be submitted using the online proposal system proposalCENTRAL https://proposalcentral.altum.com/. Please refer to the program website for the most up-to-date information: http://www.ucop.edu/poc/call.html . LOI submission instructions are now available at the program website above and on proposalCENTRAL. Detailed Application Instructions for full proposals will be posted within two weeks.

Data Management Tool Launched by University of California Libraries and Partner Institutions

Important questions are challenging researchers today:  Where should their research data reside? How can they make the data discoverable by other investigators and repurposed in new ways?  Would allowing others to access the data help advance their fields or their careers?

The University of California and several other major research institutions have partnered to develop the DMPTool, a flexible online application to help researchers generate data management plans, simple but effective documents for ensuring good data stewardship.  These plans are increasingly being required by funders such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (GBMF).  The DMPTool supports data management plans and funder requirements across the disciplines, including the humanities and physical, medical, and social sciences.
